Ursula Owusu-Ekuful, the Minister-designate of Communications, has indicated that legislation will soon be passed to make it difficult to unblock imported cell phones.
“She indicated that there will be a central identity register for mobile phones “and so it can not be used here if your phone is stolen from outside and sold here.
“If it is blocked there, here it is blocked.”
On Monday, February 15, the Ablekuma West Member of Parliament, Ursula Owusu-Ekuful made this known during her vetting to continue her position as Minister of Communications.
She said that the government would soon conduct a country-wide SIM registration exercise to get all SIM cards registered.
“It is imperative that we have our SIM cards registered,” she said.
“It is imperative that our devices be tracked. To get it done, we deal with the industry.
“So, we will notify the public when the arrangements are ready. We hope that everyone can take advantage of this new opportunity to protect our devices.”
She said she would be granted a grace period, during which all unregistered SIMs would be blocked.
