The Takoradi Market Circle is being demolished to make way for a new market.

The renowned Takoradi Market, also known as the Takoradi Market Circle, is no longer in operation.
To make room for the development of a new market, the entire edifice was eventually demolished.

For many years, plans have been in the works to build a new market to replace the decrepit one.
Since its creation some 99 years ago, the Takoradi Market Circle has undergone no substantial repair and has acquired many flaws, causing safety concerns for traders and the general public that conduct business there every second.

On August 21, 2020, President Nana Akufo-Addo turned the sod for the €48 million building of a new market.

The project will be funded by an export loan from Deutsche Bank S.p. The Sekondi Takoradi Metropolitan Assembly (STMA) turned over the market to the contractor Messrs Contracta Costruzioni Italia SLR in March 2021, following a lengthy but successful transfer of merchants to a temporary site.

The builder has been chiseling, hammering, and tearing down the old building block by block since then.

Over the weekend, the final piece of block was pounded away, allowing for the building of a new market to begin in earnest.

When Connect FM went to the site on Tuesday, July 6, it saw some things that seemed to be foundation materials being carried there.
The project is anticipated to be finished in 30 months, barring any delays.
The new market will include 2,408 businesses, 33 restaurants, food courts, bulk breaking facilities, a visitor’s parking lot, and union headquarters when it is finished.

A police station, a fire station, a post office, a clinic, administrative offices, a waste separation dock, and a staff changing room will all be included.

The new market, according to STMA, will produce between 400 and 500 direct employment, as well as 1,000 to 2,500 indirect jobs.

Trading activities will become more coordinated, according to the Assembly’s Works Department, increasing the safety and security of both dealers and their consumers.

It will also enhance the number of rentable stores and improve traffic control in and around Takoradi’s Central Business District, where the market is located.
