The porous borders of Ghana allow illegal weapons to proliferate. Small Arms C’ssion Boss

Jones Borteye Applerh, Executive Secretary of the Small Arms and Light Weapons Commission, observed that the insecure existence of the borders of Ghana is a leading factor in the smuggling of illegal weapons into Ghana.

During the launch of the ‘Ballot without Bullet’ initiative by the Commission ahead of the December 7 elections, he said this while speaking.

He said: “We need to affect the actions of people by media knowledge and information about the hazards of gun violence before, after and after the elections. The porous nature of our borders have been a major source of illicit flows of arms into this country.

For his part, Dr Mohamed Ibn Chambas, Special Representative of the Secretary-General and Director of the United Nations Office for West Africa and the Sahel, called on the Ghanaian authorities to strengthen border protection in order to avoid the smuggling of illegal weapons into the region.

He stressed that, following the actions of extremists and other terrorist groups in the Sahel region, security needs to be improved, especially on the northern borders.

“In order to ensure that small arms used in conflict are not recycled here during the election period, we need to strengthen security at the borders.”

He added that the smuggling of small arms and light weapons into the country needed to be checked.

“In fact, the northern axis is very critical because of the situation in the Sahel, the risks of aggression from militant and terrorist groups, so special attention will have to be paid to our northern borders.”
