The disturbance in Ejura is emblematic of widespread dissatisfaction in Ghana – Kwesi Aning

Prof. Kwesi Aning sees the episode as representative of a broader sense of dissatisfaction that has existed throughout the era.

If nothing is done to address the concerns of the youth, the Director of the Faculty of Academic Affairs & Research at the Kofi Annan International Peacekeeping Training Centre has warned of repetition.

“Ejura is only a metaphor for the discontent felt across the country. Many of our own leaders have warned about the poisonous combination of young dissatisfaction and unemployment. Ejura has shown that we’ve progressed beyond the rhetoric of appearing concerned…”

He was reacting to the deaths of two persons and the injuries of four others when security forces stormed a demonstration by the youth of Ejura Sekyedumase on Tuesday morning.

“It adds to mounting dissatisfaction when the State and its representatives over time communicate to citizens that they don’t matter,” he added.
Following the murder of Ibrahim Mohammed, alias Kaaka, 40, over the weekend, the youngsters have stated that they are prepared to lay down their lives until he is given justice.

On Tuesday morning, the youth rushed the police station to enquire about the scope of the investigation into the death of their colleague and #FixTheCountry campaigner, emphasizing that they want the police to leave no stone unturned in bringing the murderers to justice.

However, things became tense when a combination police and military squad confronted the enraged teenagers on the streets, shooting both of them.

The security expert told PM Express that efforts by the increasing youth to have their views heard on many critical problems have been met with dismissiveness by leadership, leading to what he sees as a coming tipping point.

He told JoyNews, “Look, how can we enhance our enforcement so that it doesn’t tip over these elements of people’s frustrations?”

He also feels that if security services’ intelligence collection had been more successful, the murders in the Ashanti Regional town may have been averted.
