Teacher’s Licensing Examinations set for October

The National Teachers ‘Council has postponed the Ghana Teachers’ Licensing Exams (GTLE) from 24 and 25 September to 1 and 2 October.

In a statement dated 11 September 2020, the Council clarified that the test had to be rescheduled as a result of a shift in the date for the completion of the semester examination for continuing students from different colleges of education throughout the country.

“The Council uses the colleges as hubs for the GTLE, so that their postponement has influenced the original deadline,” it added.

President Akufo-Addo on Sunday, 16 August 2020, instructed continuing students at the University of Cape Coast (UCC), the University of Health and Allied Sciences (UHAS), technical universities and some other colleges of education to return to school on 24 August 2020 to complete the academic year.

NTC in March 2020 postponed the Teacher Licensure Examinations for March 2020 in accordance with the

President’s Order on the cessation of all mass meetings following the outbreak of Coronavirus (COVID19) in the world.

The licensure test shall be performed by the NTC to ensure that there is an increase in teaching.

The first assessment took place from 10-12 September 2018 and included critical teaching skills, numeracy (basic calculation) and literacy (verbal aptitude and essay writing).

The test shall extend to all teachers possessing a Diploma in Basic Education (DBE), a Bachelor of Education (B.Ed) or a Postgraduate Diploma in Education (PGDE) who wish to be employed by the Ghana Education Service.

The review was opposed by a number of people, including former President John Dramani Mahama, who argued that improving the standard of teaching and exams at the Colleges of Education is more important than a licensure test.

He has therefore vowed to bring an end to the review if he has elected to power in December 2020.
