Several shops destroyed by fire at Aboabo station in Ashanti Region

Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) staff are making frantic efforts to combat a fire that burned a commercial building at Aboabo Station in Kumasi, the Ashanti Regional Capital.

The fire occurred in the early hours of Sunday, January 10, 2021, when the bulk of the building’s stores were closed.
Hafiz Tijani, Ashanti Regional correspondent for Citi News, notes that at least five fire tenders were dispatched from various fire stations in the Kumasi metropolis to the scene.

The stores, most of which resell luxury goods, were engulfed in flames that were quickly spreading and “proving hectic to contain fire officers.”
Some eyewitnesses told Citi News that they think the fire occurred when a welder was brought in by the owner of a shop to work in his store.
It is estimated that about 100 shops have been hit.
