Residents of Obuasi are protesting the ‘worsening’ unemployment rate.

Hundreds of residents from the mining town of Obuasi and adjacent areas in the Ashanti Region are marching through main streets to protest what they say as the area’s increasing unemployment condition.

The demonstrators, mostly young people, are also demanding that the management of the Anglogold Ashanti Obuasi mine provide areas for them to mine on, claiming that the corporation does not employ locals.

The organizers of the march claim they would petition the management of the Anglogold Ashanti Obuasi mine as part of their protest.

A large security presence is present, with a number of police officers from the Obuasi district command and the regional police escorting the demonstrators.
