The National Labor Commission (NLC) has requested that the striking laboratory scientists terminate their strike.
“The union should call off the existing strike and/or any further proposed action immediately,” stated Mr Ofosu Asamoah, the NLC’s Executive Secretary.
“This intervention is in conformity with section 161 of the Labour Act 2003, Act 651,” the statement said.
The statement said, “In light of the Covid-protocols, each side’s representation is limited to a maximum of two (2) individuals.”
The Ghana Medical Association (GMA) has also said that it has no plans to oppose laboratory scientists’ services in public health institutions.
Laboratory scientists across the country are on strike, claiming that physicians at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital, KATH, have taken over their jobs. Two doctors are alleged to have been selected to lead the hospital’s laboratory unit.
Many people have been stuck at various public health institutions as a result of the strike that has begun to bite.
According to medical scientists, having the Ghana College of Physicians and Surgeons take over numerous laboratories around the country is a huge concept. “If we sit there, they will have their agenda accomplished, and that will not happen.” On Thursday, a spokesperson for the Lab Scientists stated.
In a stinging rejoinder, the General Secretary of the Ghana Medical Association, GMA, remarked on 3FM 92.7’s Sunrise Morning Show, “It is extremely terrible and there is no great conspiracy against scientists.” We work together because the medical profession is regulated.”
“We all have the right to work under the law, and your license gives you that right. I’m not sure why leadership is required in this situation. If someone is trained as a lab scientist, he is prepared to work in such an environment, and their training is unique. I keep hearing that one profession is being pushed aside in favor of the other. I’m not sure where this came from.”
The Laboratory Scientists, according to the GMA, cannot keep the country hostage. “I believe the basic argument they are expressing, that the two physicians should not operate together, is something we are unable to comprehend. Go for interpretation if it’s supported up by legislation. Why are you holding the country hostage?”
