In your 2nd term, minimize your ‘elephant-sized’ gov’t- Akufo-Addo told

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo was urged, in his second term, to limit his ‘elephant-sized’ ministerial appointees.

This appeal for clarification was rendered by Dr Smart Sarpong, Senior Research Fellow at Kumasi Technical University (KsTU), as he admonished the president-elect to decrease his number of ministers in his second term in order to ensure the national purse’s real security.

There are several ministries, according to Dr. Sarpong, whose services are not important.

He cited, among other items, the Ministry of Regional Reorganization and Development and the Ministry of Supervision and Assessment as some of the ministries that need to be disbanded in order to minimize costs and waste.
When speaking on the morning show of Akoma FM GhanAkoma on Friday, December 11, Dr. Smart Sarpong told host Aduanaba Kofi Asante Ennin that “the ministerial cluster must be reduced to a maximum of 70 or 80.”

In 2017, President Akufo-Addo named a record number of 125 ministers after clinching power, a development that most Ghanaians spoke against and viewed as ‘outrageous’ from all the political divisions.

Since the president’s re-election, Dr. Sarpong claims that President Akufo-Addo must cut his ministerial appointees by 50 percent in order to instill confidence in the community.

Any of us consider that an overwhelming number of ministers are not working. It just provides avenues for wrongdoing, so the president must return to the drawing board and restrategize his number of ministers for his second term
