Gov’t to provide MPs with security after gruesome murder of Mfantseman MP

Seth Acheampong, Chairman of the Parliamentary Select Committee on Security and the Interior, who is also a Member of Parliament for the Mpraeso Constituency, has disclosed that the Minister of the Interior and the Inspector-General of the Police of Ghana are already having discussions to shield the Members of Parliament from the gruesome murder of Ekow Kwansah Hayford, a lawmaker from Mfansteman.

Mr Hayford was killed at dawn on Friday when some alleged armed robbers assaulted his convoy in his constituency on the Abeadze Dominase-Mankessim route. He was back from a trip to vote.

Mr. Acheampong, speaking in an interview with Stephen Anti on Midday Live on TV3 on Friday, October 9, said: “It is vital that those people who do such committed work on behalf of the state must be adequately covered.”

The same point we have been addressing is that Members of Parliament deserve some sort of security, on the basis that we expend the money of the public on these Members of Parliament.

“These 275 Ghanaian Members of Parliament are the representatives of all the constituencies in the country, so it is necessary to ensure that we are properly covered on behalf of the state.”

He appealed to the police in the run-up to the general elections on 7 December to bring in place security measures to protect Ghanaians from such attacks.

“On this government’s agenda, general human security is paramount and I know that the [Ghanaian] Police Force already has plans for the last quarter of 2020.”

To the family of the late Ekow Kwansah Hayford, he shared his heartfelt condolences.
