Chief Justice addresses Muntaka’s accusation of bribery against the Supreme Court of Justice

The Chief Justice of Ghana is taking measures to obtain the assistance of the Member of Parliament for Asawase, Muntaka Mubarak, in order to ascertain the truth, following the accusation made by the lawmaker against an unidentified Supreme Court judge who alleged that he had attempted to bribe the National Democratic Congress (NDC) MP to vote for Professor Mike Oquaye in the course of the speaker’s election, a statement signed by the Supreme Court.

The statement said, “The Court noted with considerable concern the remarks made by Mohammed Mubarak Muntaka, Hon. Member of Parliament for Asawase, which were widely reported in the media, claiming that the Supreme Court attempted to bribe a female Member of Parliament to vote for Professor Mike Aaron Oquaye in the election of Speaker of the 8th Parliament, which took place on 7th J.

“The general public is confident that the Hon Chief Justice deems this accusation of impropriety to be a matter of significant concern to the dignity of the judiciary.

“The Hon Chief Justice is therefore taking steps to seek the assistance of Mohammed Muntaka MP in order to establish that the matter can be dealt with in an appropriate manner.”

Mr. Muntaka reported that the Supreme Court sought to bribe those members of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) to vote for Professor Mike Oquaye during the election of Speaker of the 8th Parliament.

He told Joy News Sunday, January 10, while addressing issues relating to the appointment of a speaker for the 8th Parliament, “There was one who was led, I mean so shamefully, by a Supreme Court judge [who] called a colleague, telling her what she was going to give, having children [and] taking care of her children, and being able to take fuel from the filling station for four years.”

He repeated his allegation on Citi TV on Monday, 11 January.
He said, “The former Majority Chief, the Leader of Government Business over the weekend, told the NDC that we were bribing Members of their side.

“I said no, if you’re worried about bribing, then figure out who’s calling the representatives from my side. And then, I went on to say that I will tell you, if he wants to hear, that even certain judges of the Supreme Court have been calling on my side.

“One of the people they called, they promised her all kinds of things, that she should mention her price. I don’t take what I mean lightly, I’ve heard people say all kinds of things, we know what we’re doing, and we know what we’re keeping.”

When asked if he would be able to provide proof to that effect, he said, “We’ll certainly give all those things, the call he made, the time the call was made, and all is there, so there’s no question about it.

“If it comes to the rehearsal of all the stuff that happened that day, I’m sure it’s going to be important and it’s coming up. It would be made clear, of course, that the Member on my side who was contacted is alive, she is not dead.”
