200 police officers assigned to defend MPs – Interior Minister

Members Parliament (MPs)

Minister of the Interior Ambrose Dery said that 200 police officers were sent to defend Members of Parliament (MPs).

This comes after the brutal murder of Ekow Kwansah Hayford, Member of Parliament for Mfantseman Constituency, on Friday 9 October.

After an in-camera session with MPs on Tuesday, October 13, Mr. Dery, who is also MP for Nandom Constituency, made this announcement to members of the Parliamentary Press Corps to brief his peers on the government’s attempts to protect them after the murder of Mr. Hayford.

Because of President [Nana Addo Dankwa] Akufo-Addo’s reorganization of the security agencies, the country has more security agencies and security personnel available.

So we have proposed that we will provide an extra 200 police officers between now and the end of the year to be part of the parliamentary security team.

We are making this agreement to ensure that the unit is given the rank of divisional police command to take charge of Parliament’s members as bodyguards.

Ideally, getting to where we want to go means that we can have 800 police added afterwards, so that every MP can now have day and night coverage at home, “he said.”
